Georgia Dental Association Supports Opening of Center for IDD Care
The Georgia Dental Association proudly supports the opening of a new dental clinic in Macon dedicated to providing care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held today, with representatives from the GDA in attendance.

Designed specifically for adults with IDD, the new dental clinic will operate as an outpatient service of the Mercer University School of Medicine Center for IDD Care, Georgia’s first facility to integrate inpatient and outpatient services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a single location.
GDA President Dr. Amber Lawson has been instrumental in forging a partnership between the Dental College of Georgia and Mercer University, facilitating the establishment of the new clinic dedicated to educating students and dentists on the unique needs of this community. This collaboration not only equips future dentists with essential skills to serve this population effectively but also ensures that individuals receive the high-quality care and treatment they rightfully deserve.
“This project brings together so many of the things I care deeply about—caring for patients with special needs, supporting dental and medical education, and giving back to the institutions that helped shape me,” says Dr. Lawson. “I’m incredibly proud to help build this partnership between the Dental College of Georgia and Mercer University School of Medicine.”
“With visionary leaders like Dean Nancy Young, Dean Jean Sumner and Presidents Keen and Underwood this facility will not only provide compassionate, comprehensive care—it will become the national model for training healthcare providers to serve this underserved population,” she says. “I’m humbled and grateful to be a part of something that will truly change lives and set a new standard for the future.

The Georgia Dental Association has long advocated for greater access to oral healthcare for vulnerable populations. The establishment of the new clinic showcases the power of teamwork, uniting healthcare professionals, educators, and community members around a shared vision for exceptional care. This collaboration leverages our unique strengths to create a facility that meets community needs while training future healthcare providers. Together, we are dedicated to building a healthier future for those we serve.
